CRTD research group leader Nikolay Ninov appointed W2 professor for Cell Biology and Regeneration of Beta Cells
Effective August 1, 2020, Nikolay Ninov has been appointed as Professor for "Cell Biology and Regeneration of Beta Cells" at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) via TU Dresden’s Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB). His research group is part of the CRTD and affiliated with the Paul Langerhans Institute (PLID) of the Helmholtz Zentrum München at the University Hospital and Faculty of Medicine Carl Gustav Carus of TU Dresden.
Nikolay Ninov focusses his research on the beta cells of the pancreas as the key metabolic sensors and regulator for glycemic control. In particular, he and his team are investigating the molecular and cellular events required for pancreatic beta cell regeneration. “Our research aims to define new ways to regenerate functional beta-cells inside the body. We envision discovering the secret of regeneration by learning from the zebrafish, a model organism that is remarkable in its ability to regenerate new insulin-producing cells. We will then work together with our colleagues at the CRTD and PLID in Dresden in order to translate the basic knowledge to clinical applications. If we succeed, we hold a realistic opportunity to restore glycemic control in diabetes”, explains Nikolay Ninov.
In teaching, the newly appointed professor is active in the international master's programme "Regenerative Biology and Medicine" and at the Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB).
Nikolay Ninov is head of the research group "Beta-Cell Biology and Regeneration" at the CRTD since 2013. Previous research stays took him to the University of California San Francisco, USA, to the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim, Germany, and to the University of Toronto, Canada. Nikolay Ninov received his PhD from the Institute of Molecular Biology of the University of Barcelona, Spain.
