Prof. Kempermann Becomes New Member of the Leopoldina

Prof. Gerd Kempermann, group leader at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) and site speaker of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) Dresden, was chosen as a new member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Prof. Kempermann is a neurobiologist. His main research interest lays in understanding how new nerve cells can be formed in the adult brain, a process known as adult neurogenesis. The Kempermann research group at the CRTD and DZNE studies the regulation of adult nerve cells by genes as well as the physical and cognitive activity.

Prof. Kempermann will bring his expertise in neuroscience to the so-called Class III, the group of Leopoldina members specializing in medicine.

Together with other Leopoldina members, he will represent the German scientific community internationally, and provide policymakers and the public with science-based advice.

About the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina
Founded in 1652, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina is a classical scholarly society with around 1,600 members from almost all fields of science. It was named Germany's National Academy of Sciences in 2008. As such, it represents German science abroad and advises politicians and the public.

Leopoldina’s working framework is divided into classes and sections. All academy members are organized according to their field of research in 28 sections, which in turn are assigned to four classes. This grouping into classes, introduced in 2009, promotes interdisciplinary discussion and the participation of members in the Academy's work.
