Athletics scholarship holders 2022/23
The athletics scholarship has been awarded for the fifth year in a row. This time, it has been awarded to nine spectacular student athletes.
The group welcomes back several repeat scholarship holders: Selina Stamer (karate), Sina Stöckmann (volleyball), Jonas Wagner (high jump) and Tom Liebscher-Lucz (canoe sprint).
Five others have received the scholarship for the first time: Dorothea Ehrlich (Western riding), Mara Schöley (contemporary dance), Lara Tauchmann (handball), Palina Trus (basketball) and Simon Schubert (rowing).

Name: Dorothea Ehrlich
Degree program: Architecture
Sport: Western riding
I’m extremely motivated by the progress I’m making in training. I’m pleased to move up each tournament season. That motivates me to keep going, even if it can be stressful at times.
My greatest success so far was taking part in the German Open in 2022. I’m very happy to close out the year having won the 2022 Saxony trophy for my performance level. My goal is to qualify again for the German Open in the highest performance level, and this time to make it to the finals!

Name: Tom Liebscher-Lucz
Degree program: Bachelor’s degree in Transport Economics
Sport: Canoe sprint
In life, it is crucial to have a plan B up your sleeve. That’s why I am continuously trying to keep up my studies alongside training. It’s not always easy, but it’s an important safety net.
This scholarship has provided excellent and critical support for this balancing act over the years. We always have a personal contact at the university and have even gained a certain degree of acceptance among the student body. That’s very important.
Name: Mara Schöley
Degree program: Teacher Training for Secondary Schools
Sport Jazz & modern / contemporary dance
For me, the similarity between studying and competitive athletics lies in the responsibility you have to accept for yourself. You must be well-organized and have good time management to be successful.
Since JMC is a team sport, it is especially important to me that we also support each other as a team. That is just as important as the coach and our supporters in the stands.
Name: Simon Schubert
Degree program: Teacher Training (Elementary Schools)
Sport: Rowing
At the moment, competitive sports take up a lot of space in my life. But that won’t be the case forever. My studies are paramount in preparing me for the life that follows.
My greatest success so far was taking part in under-23 world and European championships. In the future, I hope to win a medal in a world championship.
Name: Selina Stamer
Degree program: Medicine
Sport: Karate
I have made great advancement in my athletic development over the past year, and this would not have been possible without the help and support of TUD.
By landing 5th place in the Premier League in Morocco, I proved that I’m fit to compete with the best of the best in the world. At the start of by studies, this would have been unthinkable. But with discipline, motivation and the right environment of support in attaining one’s goals, anything is possible.
Name: Sina Stöckmann
Degree program: Geography
Sport: Volleyball
I feel more connected to the university and appreciate the opportunity I have to study my favorite subject in addition to my athletic pursuits. Both studying and competitive athletics require perseverance and motivation.
Last season, together with the Dresdner SC team, I played in the highest German division – the first Bundesliga – and placed 3rd in the German championship. Next year, we hope to compete in the Universiade in China.
Name: Lara Tauchmann
Degree program: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology
Sport: Handball
For me, this competitive sport provides the perfect balance to the intense cognitive demands of studying at university.
The financial support I receive allows me to fully concentrate on athletics and earning my degree without the added stress of a side job. In particular, I appreciate having a personal contact available at all times.
In a few years, I would like to play in the first Bundesliga.

Degree program: Regenerative Biology and Medicine
Sport: Basketball
Basketball is an extremely dynamic team sport, which needs a lot of strategical thinking, fast decision making and leadership. That is why it never gets boring.
Studying and competitive sports are alike: Both require a lot of time, commitment and effort, sometimes a lot of repetition to achieve a great results.
Name: Jonas Wagner
Degree program: Physics
Sport: High jump
You can’t be a competitive athlete forever, so for the time afterwards, it’s good to have something in your back pocket. This scholarship ensures that I can train at the sports complexes very close to the university and financially enables me to compete at a more professional level.
Every high jumper wears spiked shoes to ensure traction in the approach to the bar. You need two dozen steel spikes under your feet for this to work. I mean, how cool is that? :D
