Media education - what's that?
Media education deals with the questions of what influences media have on educational, socialisation and educational processes of individuals as well as on the communication culture of a society as a whole, and how media can be used to support learning processes (media didactics). A broad definition of media includes mass media, all information and communication media, as well as interactive media and social media. Media education examines the effects of social mediatisation processes from an educational perspective. Mediatisation is a more suitable term than 'digitisation', since - as recent debates clearly demonstrate - digitisation has a mainly technical and economic connotation, but no social or subject-related connotation. Mediatisation refers to the fact that societies cannot be adequately described and explained in their essential functions, including the education and training system, without referring to media aspects.
