Antonite Image Database (AID)
In the DFG project ‘Normative Order and Symbolic Presence of the Antonites. Edition of their statutes and analysis of their signs', which has been conducted at FOVOG since 2022, the aim is not only to edit texts. In a second part of the project, the objective is to systematically record all images and objects that symbolically refer to the order and its patron saint, the monk father Antonius. These include, for example, broadsheets, panel paintings, wall and book paintings, as well as sculptures and pilgrim badges. We understand these images and objects as symbolisations that were intended to express, convey and also legitimise the Antonite guiding principles. The media recorded here do not all originate from the Antonite environment, but in any case they illustrate that the symbolic presence of the Antonites was also able to assert itself outside the order.
Please note that this image database is constantly being revised and supplemented. You can download the file as a CSV or Excel file (as at: 24.02.2025).
For copyright reasons, our database does not present the recorded images and objects, but links to them where possible. We would be pleased to receive information on further material. Please send them to Mirko Breitenstein or Nathalie Schmidt.
