Markus Scholz interviewed by The Pioneer: "Populism harms companies in the long term"
In an interview with "The Pioneer", Prof. Markus Scholz spoke about Deutsche Bank's termination of its lease agreement with the association "Die Familienunternehmer" after the latter organized a meeting with the AfD. Prof. Scholz sees the bank's actions as a clear signal that it does not want to give space to populist actors and places it in a broader attitude of large German companies. He also refers to his research findings and emphasizes that cooperation with populist forces has always had negative consequences, both historically and economically.
Markus Scholz was critical of the new AfD strategy of family entrepreneurs, describing it as "[...] remarkably politically naive". Populists could neither be confronted with content nor influenced by discussions. In the interview, Prof. Scholz also talks about the risks of populist politics for companies and economies and refers to his book "Wirtschaft mit Werten", in which he explains the long-term damage of populism and the responsibility of companies in liberal democracies in more detail.
