Lunch Session: Open Markets, Open Societies – The Importance of Democracy and Openness
On August 7, 2024, biosaxony, the Saxon network for biotechnology, medical technology, and healthcare, hosted an online lunch session. In this session, Professor Dr. Markus Scholz discussed the critical importance of open markets and open societies for economic success and social stability.
Professor Dr. Scholz examined the challenges posed by populism, right-wing extremism, and political instability, and their impact on trust in democratic institutions and the rule of law. He emphasized how these developments can undermine the economic climate and international competitiveness of Germany.
Using concrete examples from various countries, he illustrated the strategies that companies can employ to actively support social and democratic values. He highlighted both the moral obligations and the economic benefits of proactive sociopolitical engagement.
