Welcome to our chair's website!
Our work focuses on current challenges for management against the backdrop of cultural, environmental and technological changes in society, especially regarding questions of corporate responsibility (cf. Business Ethics, Business & Society, CSR, Sustainability). We aim to contribute to addressing grand societal challenges, e.g. (de)globalization, digitalization, climate change and human rights, with methodologically diverse, empirical as well as philosophically informed research.
Our research is oriented towards management studies, social science, and philosophy. The focus is on strategic sustainability and responsibility management, sustainable change and transformation, business and human rights, and corporate political engagement and responsibility. Furthermore, we analyze the normative foundations of business ethics.
In teaching, one of our main tasks is to coordinate and develop the master's program "Business Ethics und Responsible Management" (renamed in 2019; original name: "Business Ethics und CSR Management"), which was launched in 2010. This degree program was the first of its kind in Germany, and its social science and business focus distinguishes it from comparable degree programs that tend to have a more pronounced philosophical or environmental science orientation.
The degree program consists of a combination of normative business ethics, diagnostic competences grounded in social science, and strategic management. We offer a comprehensive portfolio of basic and advanced modules at the interface of sustainability, business ethics, organization, and strategy.
We aim to encourage students to develop a critical and reflective approach to organizations and their management. In doing so, our students learn to identify and analyze complex management challenges, to develop their own theory-based solutions, and to implement these in business practice. The discussion of case studies (real cases) plays a central role in the master's program since it promotes the development of an interdisciplinary and practical perspective on management challenges.
Many of our students are also involved in sneep and organize public lectures on business ethics topics as part of this association's work. In our teaching and research, we cooperate with scholars at leading international research institutions, e.g., in Austria, France, Switzerland, and the United States, as well as with numerous well-known companies, governmental, and non-governmental organizations.
On October 1, 2022, Prof. Dr. Markus Scholz was appointed Professor of Business Management, esp. Responsible Management and thereby took over the coordination of this chair. The chair's previous orientation in research and teaching will be mostly continued. In addition, the chair's profile will be further sharpened in the areas of strategic sustainability management, sustainable change and innovation, business and human rights, and political engagement and corporate responsibility. An even stronger cooperation with related disciplines and chairs at the TU Dresden is also planned.
