Diversity and Ecology of Soil Animals
Summary: Soils harbour a rich diversity of animals that are essential in soil functions and ecosystem services. The module covers ecology and taxonomy of the most important soil invertebrate groups. Students learn specific techniques to quantitatively sample soil animals in the field, to assess physico-chemical soil conditions and to prepare specimens for scientific collections. Students practice identification of soil animals under the microscope and learn to evaluate the composition of soil animal communities and their biodiversity as bioindicators of soil health and disturbances.
