Material Science
The Material Science degree program here at TU Dresden is offered to students as a Bachelor's and Diplom degree program, although it is not possible to do a Master's degree here at the university after the Bachelor's degree. We therefore recommend that you choose the diploma course. Here you will find a precise distinction between the two degrees.
In general, Material Science deals with many different natural science subfields, including in the undergraduate program:
- Organic and inorganic chemistry,
- physics,
- Advanced mathematics (fundamentals and engineering math),
- Technical mechanics and design theory,
- computer science,
- electrical engineering,
There is also the "Material Science" module, which gives you an overview of the entire subject area. The first to fourth semester of the foundation course is very similar to mechanical engineering and process engineering. You should have an interest in the natural sciences and be prepared to sacrifice an evening or two to prepare for various internships.
The foundation course starts in the 5th semester, which includes various compulsory modules, but above all a specialist internship and interdisciplinary project work.
There is also an internship in the 7th semester which lasts 16 weeks, during which you work in industry or research and gain a deep insight into the work of an engineer. At the same time, you will write your interdisciplinary project work (formerly known as "Kleiner Beleg"), in which you work on a complex task during your internship.
In the specialization course from the 8th semester, you can choose a specialization and then take your compulsory elective modules (technical and non-technical). In the 9th semester, you will complete the research internship (formerly known as "Großer Beleg"), which is similar to the interdisciplinary project work, but is more extensive. At the end of your studies, you will write your diploma thesis in the 10th semester.
All three major theses are usually supervised by a Research Associate at the university and a representative of the respective company or research institution.
You also have the opportunity to complete semesters or internships abroad at any time. From our experience, however, we can recommend that you only do this in your main degree program. You can find information on studying abroad here.
