The focus of this lecture series lies with steels as well as cast iron, however alloys of aluminium, titanium and magnesium will also be dealt with. The requirements, e.g. weldability, formability and castability, placed on the materials will be considered along with the measures necessary to fulfil them. In addition, the thermal treatment procedures of metallic materials will be introduced and a connection made between heating and cooling and the material procedures of hardenability and the development of internal stress. As a result the students obtain a deeper insight into the microstructure-property dependency of metallic materials and can connect these with the production and processing steps. The lecture is divided into: Metallic Materials 1 (thermal treatment), which takes place in the winter semester and Metallic Materials 2 (iron and iron free materials), which begins in the winter semester and carries on into the summer semester.
