The lecture series will deliver the essential theoretical information that is needed for the preparation, display and interpretation of microstructures. This knowledge is the premise on which an understanding of the causal chain of technological history-microstructure-properties and failure analysis is based. The practical class are there to enable the preparation of various material groups, and to display and evaluate these. Moreover, several measurement procedures used for a quantitative characterisation will be introduced. The student learns to critically arrange the obtained measurement data and to use it for the acquisition of microstructure property dependencies.
