Ralph Stelzer studied mechanical engineering at the TU Dresden. He received his doctorate in 1983 after working as a scientific assistant for several years. Between 1982 and 1983 he was an employee at the Kupplungswerk Dresden and was mainly concerned with applications of FEM. From 1983 to 1990 he worked at the PLANETA Radebeul printing press factory, first as CAD group leader and later as head of the main technical services department. During this time he habilitated on problems of product modelling.
Between 1990 and the end of 2000, he was an employee of the Karlsruhe-based company EIGNER+PARTNER AG, most recently as the board member responsible for research and development. During this time he was mainly concerned with problems of developing and introducing product data management systems. In January 2001, Ralph Stelzer was appointed professor at the TU Dresden and has held the Chair of Engineering Design/CAD (now Chair of Virtual Product Development) until June 2021.
Ralph Stelzer is a member of the Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft für Produktentwicklung (WiGeP). He is also the spokesperson of the Zentrums Virtueller Maschinenbau (ZVM) and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Zentrums für Informationsdienste und Hochleistungsrechnung (ZIH) at TU Dresden.
