German Cancer Aid extends funding for the Mildred Scheel Early Career Center Dresden for another two years
The Mildred Scheel Early Career Center has been supporting the career development of researching doctors and scientists in the field of cancer research at five university locations, including Dresden, since 2018. The German Cancer Aid (DKH ) is now extending the funding of this successful program for another two years and is providing 3.2 million euros for the Dresden site. This will sustainably strengthen and continue the successful promotion of early-career researchers in oncology.
Center spokespersons Prof. Martin Bornhäuser and Prof. Frank Buchholz are pleased with the extension of the funding. The MSNZ Dresden has established itself as an excellent platform for the targeted promotion of outstanding young doctors and scientists in the previous funding period. It will continue to support innovative, interdisciplinary research approaches that combine clinically relevant issues with state-of-the-art methods from basic research, translational oncology, cell therapy, and artificial intelligence.
The MSNZ P2 program is based on a coordinated funding concept that addresses different career stages of early-career researchers and connects clinical and basic research. In addition to clearly structured research periods, the program supports measures for career development, curricular training opportunities, and an individual mentoring concept for MSNZ fellows.
The extension of the funding makes it possible to further consolidate the established structures, expand successful projects, and initiate new, forward-looking research projects. The combination of structured promotion of early-career researchers, excellent research infrastructure and close links to clinical issues will make a significant contribution to further raising the profile of Dresden as a leading center for innovative cancer research. Together with other junior researcher funding programs, the MSNZ has contributed significantly to the establishment of the Dresden School of Clinical Science.
Prof. Bornhäuser emphasizes: "With the renewed support from the German Cancer Aid, the MSNZ Dresden can sustainably strengthen the promotion of early-career researchers in oncology and continue to set the course for the long-term development of innovative research approaches that will improve patient care in the future."
Prof. Buchholz adds: "The follow-up funding also confirms the success of the promotion of early-career researchers to date: several MSNZ fellows have been able to take on top-class positions at national and international locations during or following their funding. The individualized funding of the MSNZ Fellow junior research groups has proven to be an effective instrument for career development and the sustainable continuation of scientific careers."
