First successful tablet-based examination in the MEDiC model degree program
On February 6, 2026, a digital examination with iPads was conducted for the first time in the MEDiC model degree program of TU Dresden at the Chemnitz Medical Campus, a milestone for the digitally oriented model degree program and for the implementation of digital examinations at the Faculty of Medicine (MF-TUD).
The most important points at a glance:
- For the first time, an existing exam app could be configured so that it can also be used on privately usable iPads.
- MEDiC students use their own MEDiC iPad, which they receive from Chemnitz Hospital (KC) for the duration of their studies and with which they are familiar.
- The digital evaluation enables efficient and error-free correction. Paper sheets no longer need to be scanned and results are available immediately.
- More design options within the examination: MC questions, answers to complex issues, case vignettes, diagnostic image findings, etc.
- No additional iPads are required as the students' existing devices are used.
- No more paper exams - this saves costs, conserves resources and enables completely digital archiving.
MEDiC students receive an iPad at the start of their studies, which they can use both during their studies and privately. The devices are provided and managed by the KC. The Apple ID can be used to install the apps provided by the KC as well as all other apps from the official App Store.
How can you use it to conduct a secure exam? Can students use all the functions of the iPad during the exam?
To prevent students from accessing other functions of the iPad during the exam, a special app configuration allows only the exam app to be used in Apple Kiosk mode when the exam starts. All other functions and apps are blocked for the duration of the exam so that access to the internet, scripts, etc. is excluded. The uniform configuration is loaded centrally onto all iPads by Chemnitz University Hospital's Mobile Device Management (MDM) so that all exam participants have identical conditions.
Previously, special university examination iPads were issued for some examinations at the faculty, which were already preconfigured in kiosk mode. However, this approach involved considerable effort, as the devices were regularly transported between Dresden and Chemnitz. In addition, a large number of additional iPads were required, which could only be used for examination purposes. As a result, it was not possible to conduct several examinations in different subject areas at the same time.
The new examination format solves all these challenges, as students' existing MEDiC iPads can now be used - securely, flexibly and efficiently. It is currently a pilot project that will be continued, optimized and further developed after its first successful use.
The tablet-based examination format was created through cooperation between the Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden (MF-TUD) and the KC as part of MEDiC together with the examination app development team (UCAN).
The development and implementation is being led by Christopher Kunz (study program coordinator MEDiC, MF-TUD), Thomas Kugel (deputy head of the IT department, MF-TUD), Gordon Lässig (IT infrastructure team, KC) and Christopher Kastner (IT manager MEDiC, IT KC) in cooperation with the company UCAN.
