Prof. Dr. Gerhard Ehninger awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany

Minister President Michael Kretschmer presents the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Prof. Dr. Gerhard Ehninger.
A special honor for a prominent physician and committed citizen: Prof. Dr. Gerhard Ehninger has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The award ceremony took place on May 27, 2025 , in the Saxon State Chancellery, where a total of nine citizens were honored for their achievements. Minister President Michael Kretschmer presented the award on behalf of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Prof. Ehninger has made excellent scientific and medical achievements and contributed significantly to the development of university medicine in Dresden. As a world-renowned haematologist and oncologist, he has developed innovative procedures for the early detection and treatment of cancer. He has also co-founded several organizations that are still successfully active in the fight against cancer today and are internationally renowned.
The award recognizes both his scientific achievements and his long-standing social commitment to respectful coexistence and against hatred, everyday racism and exclusion. He actively supports a democratic and cosmopolitan urban society and promotes tolerance and participation. His commitment to the annual " Dresden is(s)t bunt" street festival, a celebration of diversity, hospitality and friendly dialog, was particularly highlighted at the award ceremony.

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (sometimes referred to as the Cross of Merit) is awarded to German and foreign personalities for outstanding political, economic-social or intellectual achievements. In addition, the award recognizes special services to the Federal Republic, for example in the social or charitable field. It is the highest recognition of the Federal Republic of Germany for exceptional services to the common good and is awarded in eight different levels.
