Review 4th Residency Day: Why does university medicine need researching doctors?
Panel discussion on the 4th Residency Day
On November 17, 2025, Residency Day took place for the fourth time at Dresden University Medicine. The successful event organized by the Dresden School of Clinical Science (DSCS) once again offered medical students the valuable opportunity to gain exclusive insights into specialist training at the various clinics and institutes at the site.
Inspiring panel discussion at the start
The event kicked off with a top-class panel discussion on the topic of "Why does university medicine need researching doctors?". Under the moderation of Prof. Björn Falkenburger, Prof. Esther Troost (Dean of the Faculty of Medicine), Prof. Uwe Platzbecker (Medical Director of Dresden University Hospital), Dr. Loreen Natusch Bufe (doctor in further training), Dr. Marius Bill (specialist) and Ms. Hengst (medical student) discussed the importance and challenges of researching doctors in university medicine. The focus was on questions such as:
- How can the combination of patient care, research and teaching be optimally successful?
- What does it mean in everyday life when doctors also work scientifically?
- How are career paths as a clinician scientist structured?
First-hand experience reports and information
Following the panel discussion, clinician scientists who are currently undergoing specialist training themselves offered authentic insights into their day-to-day work. They reported on the diverse research opportunities in their respective clinics and departments and were available to answer the students' questions. In addition, general information on specialist training was provided to give participants a sound basis for making decisions about their future career path.
The 4th Residency Day once again showed how important the close integration of research and medical practice is for modern university medicine. The event not only offered professional insights, but also inspiration and personal guidance for prospective doctors. We would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment and are already looking forward to the next Residency Day!
