Wet lab training on Whole Genome Sequencing and Genomic Surveillance
The European Reference Laboratory for Public Health on Legionella (EURL-PH-LEGI) hoted the 2025 wet-lab training from 3 to 7 November 2025 at the Hospices Civils de Lyon, France. This annual training is a core component of the EURL-PH-LEGI mission to support and strengthen Legionella surveillance capacities across Europe.
Conducted by the French National Reference Laboratory for Legionella, the 2025 edition focused on the practical aspects of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and genomic surveillance, two essential pillars for modern monitoring of Legionnaires’ disease. Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with experts and gain hands-on experience using both Illumina and Nanopore sequencing technologies.
The five-day programme included a mix of theoretical and practical elements, starting with an introduction to genomic surveillance and a guided tour of the sequencing platform. Practical sessions covered DNA extraction, library preparation, and full sequencing workflows. The final day focused on the analysis and interpretation of sequencing data, enabling participants to apply WGS approaches within their own laboratories.
Eight participants, each representing a different network country or institute, were selected. This initiative reflects EURL-PH-LEGI’s ongoing dedication to strengthening laboratory capacity, harmonizing methods, and supporting EU Member States in the surveillance and control of Legionella infections.
