New Centre for Metabolic and Immunological Diseases and Therapeutic Technologies Saxony

On Monday, December 3, the construction of the new Centre for Metabolic and Immunological Diseases and Therapeutic Technologies Saxony (MITS) began with the official groundbreaking ceremony. The MITS is affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine at Technische Universität Dresden and the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden.

The federal and state governments are supporting the new modern research building, which will require investments of more than 35.5 million euros. Together, experts in internal medicine, endocrinology, immunology, surgery, transplantation medicine, cell biology, and materials science will develop new medical approaches at the centre. Their work will concentrate primarily on new methods for the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Therefore, many IRTG and transCampus projects will benefit directly from the new capacities and the international cooperation will be strengthened even further. Dr Eva Stange, Minister for Science and Culture of Saxony, also values the increasing international reputation: ”The MITS will be one of the first places to go to for scientists from all over the world.”

“In order to reduce the epidemic spread and to develop new treatment methods with a low complication rate for patients, we have to follow new paths,” says Prof Stefan R. Bornstein, speaker of the MITS and Vice Dean of International Affairs and Development at Technische Universität Dresden. “Broad interdisciplinary approaches are required to develop new findings from metabolic-immunological biomedicine into novel and effective strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and its sequelae.”

The close interlinking within the more than 2,000 square meters of research space at MITS will further strengthen the international competitiveness of Dresden, the Faculty of Medicine and the Dresden University Hospital. “The MITS is set to be a symbol for innovation in Dresden and Saxony,” adds Prof Bornstein.
