Mildred Scheel Early Career Centers (MSNZ) are funded by the German Cancer Aid (Deutsche Krebshilfe). The goal of these five centers is to create optimal conditions for young researchers in the life and medical sciences, enabling them to conduct independent research in the field of molecular oncology.
The following section presents our five locations.
Mildred Scheel School of Oncology (MSSO) at the Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO) Aachen Bonn Cologne Düsseldorf
The Mildred Scheel School of Oncology Aachen-Bonn-Cologne-Düsseldorf (MSSO ABCD) brings together four leading research centers in the ABCD region: the University Hospitals of Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf as well as the Faculties of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Universities Universities of Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf. Together, these four partner sites form a unique and internationally recognized research network dedicated to translational oncology. The region combines outstanding expertise in cancer genomics, tumor immunology, and precision oncology, supported by close collaboration between leading clinicians and internationally competitive cancer researchers. The MSSO ABCD offers an interdisciplinary environment where Physician Scientists and Medical Scientists can work at the interface of basic research and clinical application. Access to cutting-edge technologies – particularly next-generation sequencing, high-performance computational biology, high-throughput screening and in vivo imaging – enables innovative research approaches and fosters the development of tomorrow’s cancer therapies. Mildred Scheel Early Career Center Dresden
The Mildred Scheel Early Career Center Dresden (MSNZ Dresden) fosters the next generation of clinician and medical scientists in precision oncology through its P² – Personalized Career Development in Precision Oncology program. P² provides tailored and flexible career paths that enable clinician scientists to combine clinical training with protected research time and support medical scientists in developing scientific independence and establishing their own research profiles. By bringing clinical and basic science expertise together – including through interdisciplinary tandem structures – the program creates an environment in which innovative research can be translated more effectively from bench to bedside. Its overarching goal is to empower early-career scientists to pursue independent careers while advancing translational research and precision oncology for the benefit of patients. To address individual needs at different career stages, P² provides tailored support ranging from medical doctoral and clinical fellowships to protected research opportunities and interdisciplinary tandems.

Mildred Scheel Early Career Center Frankfurt-Marburg
The Mildred Scheel Career Center (MSNZ) Frankfurt-Marburg supports the next generation of scientists in cancer research by systematically promoting young physicians conducting research (clinician scientists, CS) and non-clinical researchers in oncology (medical scientists, MS). Its main goals are (1) to establish internationally competitive, continuous career paths for CS and MS, covering all career levels, (2) to create attractive positions for scientific target roles (e.g. professorships and group leader positions), (3) to encourage and support international mobility (e.g. through Short Term Fellowships), (4) to promote equal opportunities and (5) to support individual career development through qualification and mentoring programs available at both partner sites. The scientific program of the MSNZ is closely linked to the joint research program of the University Cancer Center (UCT) Frankfurt-Marburg, the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) and the Frankfurt Cancer Institute (FCI). Mildred Scheel Early Career Center at the University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCCH)
The Mildred Scheel Cancer Career Center Hamburg (MSNZ Hamburg) supports clinician and medical scientists at all career stages through funding, mentoring, networking and career development. Embedded within the University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCC Hamburg) at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), the center promotes interdisciplinary cancer research with a particular focus on dissemination and metastasis. MSNZ Hamburg fosters scientific excellence, collaboration and empowers the next generation of oncology researchers. A special focus is aimed at collaborative initiatives bridging different institutions and departments within the UCC Hamburg but also with external partner institutions in the region. Mildred Scheel Early Career Center Würzburg
The Mildred Scheel Early Career Center Würzburg (MSNZ Würzburg) supports young researchers from the life and medical sciences in developing independent careers in molecular oncology. As a joint center of the University of Würzburg and the University Hospital Würzburg, located close to CCC Mainfranken and the Max Planck Research Group Systems Immunology, it connects basic, translational and clinical cancer research. The scientific program addresses mechanisms of tumor initiation, development and maintenance, with a focus on transcriptional deregulation, disrupted protein homeostasis, tumor–immune interactions, AI-driven oncology and CAR-T cell therapy. MSNZ Würzburg currently supports Postdoc Projects and Joint Projects to advance innovative translational and therapeutic approaches. Website MSNZ Würzburg
