DTOS - Dresden Translational Oncology SeminarsDresden Translational Oncology Seminar, Prof. Luis Parada, Brain Tumor Center The Sloan Kettering Institute, New York
Luis F. Parada was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Pasteur Institute. He headed the Molecular Embryology Section at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, when he moved to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas as the inaugurating Diana and Richard C. Strauss Distinguished Chair in Developmental Biology and was Director of the Kent Waldrep Foundation Center for Basic Neuroscience Research. During his time in Dallas, Dr. Parada advanced his studies of nerve cell survival and regeneration, mood disorders, and renewed his attention on cancer with emphasis on the nervous system. His laboratory uses genetic mouse models to study human disease including Neurofibromatosis, cancers of the nervous system, autism, and neural development. In 2015, Dr. Parada moved his laboratory to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to assume leadership of the interdisciplinary Brain Tumor Center. In addition, Dr. Parada holds the Albert C. Foster Chair and is Professor of Cancer Biology and Genetics.
The Parada lab uses genetically engineered mouse models to recapitulate and study human disease. These mouse strains are used to understand the natural history of tumors of the nervous system, including glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST), neurofibromas, and other diseases associated with neurofibromatosis (NF1). The Parada lab have developed mouse models of GBM based on targeted mutation of three tumor suppressor genes that are frequently mutated in GBM: Pten, p53, and NF1. These mouse strains develop GBM and the histopathology is highly related to that observed in human GBM. The fact that all mice develop GBM in predictable fashion has allowed detailed investigation into the earliest events and progression of these tumors.
Exciting topic or interested in chatting with Luis Parada about his research? Then feel free to sign up via email (Karoline.laske@nct-dresden.de) for a short, in-person breakout session thereafter.
Clinicians will be rewarded with one continuing education point (SLÄK).
