Hands-on Training for the Surgery of Tomorrow
On April 16 and 17, an intensive hands-on course in minimally invasive and robotic surgery took place at the Surgical Skills Lab Dresden of the Department of Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery and DGAV Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Surgery, in close cooperation with the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV).
Ten young surgeons from across Germany took this special opportunity to further develop their operative skills under realistic training conditions. The course focused on practice-oriented training using modern simulators, laparoscopic training stations, and the Da Vinci surgical system, which plays a central role in robotic surgery.
Participants particularly appreciated the high level of practical training, the intensive individual supervision, and the close guidance provided by the department’s experienced surgeons. The direct exchange with experts not only offered valuable professional insights but also helped deepen their understanding of surgical strategies and decision-making processes in everyday clinical practice.
The Surgical Skills Lab Dresden provides ideal conditions for this type of training: with its modern training environment, it creates a protected space where surgical techniques can be practiced repeatedly, refined, and mastered with increasing confidence—independently of the pressures of the operating room. This not only strengthens technical skills but also builds the confidence needed for clinical practice.

Especially in light of current changes in medical training and hospital reform, this type of structured practical education is becoming increasingly important. As not all procedures will be performed at every hospital site in the future, specialized training formats outside the operating room are becoming an essential part of surgical qualification.
The Surgical Skills Lab Dresden therefore makes an important contribution to the future-oriented education of the next generation of surgeons—practical, innovative, and at the highest professional level.
