Junior Professor Dorit Brixius has been awarded the German L’Oréal UNESCO ‘For Women in Science’ Award. The prize, endowed with 25,000 euros, recognizes outstanding scientific achievements by early-career female researchers. The award ceremony took place on 16 September 2026 in Düsseldorf.

Dorit Brixius was elected to the Young Forum by the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Class of the Saxon Academy of Sciences (SAW) in Leipzig. The certificate was presented at a ceremony during the SAW’s public spring meeting on 10 April 2026. To mark her election, Professor Brixius gave an interview to the SAW.

Since the start of the 2026 summer term, our team has been joined by two new members. We would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. des. Louisa-Dorothea Gehrke, our postdoctoral researcher, and Liliana Hasler, our research assistant!

Last April, Professor Brixius published her book 'Creolised Science: Knowledge in the Eighteenth Century Indo-Pacific' with Cambridge University Press, in which she explores traditional plant knowledge, particularly from indigenous people in the Indo-Pacific and enslaved women and men in Mauritius, as it found its way into the culture of economically important plants and European science, and how these cross-cultural processes took place. The book is a call to appreciate and examine historical plant knowledge in its own cultural contexts.

The magazine of the Master's 'Biology in Society' met with Professor Brixius to find out more about her research interests, what she is most looking forward to in her new position and what books she would recommend everyone to read.
