We study various aspects of the biology of methanogenic archaea using genetic, physiologic and biochemical approaches.

Teaching

The professorship is involved in all degree programs offered by the Faculty of Biology, including the Bachelor's degree program in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, the Master's degree program in Molecular Biosciences and Productive Biosystems, and the Master's degree program in Biochemistry, which is offered by the Faculty of Chemistry and Food Chemistry.

Microbial Diversity

Methane producing microorganisms are strictly anaerobic and belong to the "third domain of life," the Archaea. Considering the relevance of methane -both as a potent greenhouse gas and as a renewable energy source- relatively little is known about these important organisms. We study various aspects of the methanogenic biology in order to better understand the environmental role of methanogens and to exploit their biotechnological potential.
