The role of salicylic acid and auxins in defence responses of Brassica crop plants
The aim of the project was to understand the influence of plant hormones, especially salicylic acid, for two important plant diseases on Brassica rapa (Chinese cabbage). The effect of Plasmodiophora brassicae-infection on the content of the main defense molecule in a plant organism, salicylic acid, in Brassica rapa was investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This plant species was selected as a model for our study because, within the genus Brassica, it is most common in the human diet and P. brassicae causes the clubroot disease (P. brassicae is a local pathogen - exists in root of a plant) destroying entire fields of crops. Further, we concentrated on the possbility of exogenous application of salicylic acid in the protection of B. rapa from clubroot disease. In addition, a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the separation and identification of phenolic compounds in B. rapa tissues was developed. Using this method the effect of P. brassicae-infection on the qualitative and quantitative content of flavonoids and phenolic acids in B. rapa was investigated.
