Research Fields
Molecular phosphorus chemistry:
The research activities are focused on the development of modern and novel concepts in main group chemistry with particular emphases on reactivity studies and sustainable applications. The basic research aspects can be divided into:
- P4 transformtion and activation - P4 as sustainable phosphorus source
- Phosphorus-Element or Phosphorus-Phosphorus coupling reactions
- Synthesis and stabilization of unique phosphorus bonding-motifs and their use in follow up chemistry and catalysis
- (Spectro)-electrochemical investigations of highly reactive phosphorus compounds – insights into transient intermediates
Extraction and supramolecular chemistry
Another research focus of the Weigand group is the development and application of multifunctional ligands in coordination chemistry and solvent extraction to recover high-tech metals such as rare earths or precious metals and other strategic elements from various sources in the context of urban mining. In particular P,N- and P,O-ligand systems were investigated as selective receptors for the binding and separation of such species.
Industrial Chemistry
Heterogeneous catalysis
The research activities are focused on the development and improvement of innovative catalyst systems via synthetic and post-synthetic strategies for application in petrochemical industry and resource change to biogenic and fossil residues. The basic research aspects can be divided into:
- Hydrogen supported cracking of biogenic residues using hierarchical alumino-silicates
- Deactivation Behaviour of Industrial ZSM-5 in Ethanol to Hydrocarbons Process
- Production of industrial catalysts for preferred propene production and stabilization for biogenic co-feeding in FCC-process
- Refinement of biomass-based resources to fuel and high value chemicals
