2D Materials In Action: Energy Technologies

Between 2000 and 2018, global electricity access grew significantly, from 78% to 90%, reducing the number of people without electricity to 789 million. However, as the global population continues to expand, so too does the demand for affordable energy. Simultaneously, an economy still heavily reliant on fossil fuels contributes to drastic climate changes.

To achieve SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy for all by 2030, it is crucial to invest in renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and thermal power while also enhancing energy productivity and ensuring equitable energy access for all communities.^[1] A pivotal element in this transition lies in the development of advanced materials, particularly 2D materials, which have the potential to revolutionize energy storage, conversion, transport, and hydrogen storage.

2D materials, with their unique properties, can significantly improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of renewable energy technologies, enabling faster and more widespread adoption of clean energy solutions. By advancing energy storage, conversion, transport systems, and hydrogen storage and enhancing the performance of batteries, fuel cells and solar cells, these materials can play a transformative role in driving the clean energy transition. In addition, 2D materials can enable the development of future safe and sustainable energy devices like aqueous batteries.

As the world expands its energy infrastructure and upgrades technology, particularly with an unprecedented demand driven by artificial intelligence and data processing, 2D materials will help ensure that clean, efficient, and affordable energy is available to all, simultaneously supporting global economic growth and environmental sustainability.
