The September 2022 Alumnus of the Month is an expert in Physics
When Martin Gerlach decided to study at TUD, he doubted – despite all evidence to the contrary – that he was capable enough. All he knew was that physics would let him work in many different fields. Ten years later, he had completed his doctorate (summa cum laude) on the application of physical and mathematical models to sociodynamic phenomena.
In his interview, he tells us, “A key moment for me was a course on computer-aided modeling using simulation. That’s what got me into programming, which is now an integral part of my work. Computer simulations are an easy way to pose questions and take an exploratory approach to problem-solving.” In his current role with the American Wikimedia Foundation, the 37-year-old is helping to close knowledge gaps around the world.
Recently, after receiving a request from the TUD mentoring program for pupils, he immediately agreed to be “brought in for questioning” about his studies in Physics by a group of eager school pupils. The goal of the project is to raise awareness of the challenges of studying at university as well as the subsequent occupational fields with reference to specific degree programs.
