Researching cannibalism in bacteria: »At work with...« Microbiologist Lena Friebel
Microbes have a bad reputation - you can't see them with the naked eye and we often associate them with diseases. But microbiologist Lena Friebel is fascinated: Bacilli are truly multi-talented. In the new episode »At work with...«, Lena takes us through her day-to-day work in the lab, where she examines the Bazillus subtilis.
After completing her studies, the doctoral student wondered: "How far can you research basic principles and still generate added value for society and future generations?" In her research into Bacillus subtilis, she is now focusing on processes of cannibalism. For example, the bacterium can survive highly adverse conditions.
Lena and her colleagues are a well-oiled tag team machine. They have known each other since their time as students. However, everyday life in the lab is always full of new and exciting challenges. Flexibility, perseverance and, above all, having fun at work are what helps Lena to keep a cool head in these tricky moments.
Why does working in the lab remind you of a shared kitchen? And where does the doctoral student see herself and her research in the next five years? Lena answers these and more questions in the video (in German language).
In the video series “At work with...,” TU Dresden’s social media team accompanies employees of TU Dresden or its partner institutions for the day. The videos provide insight into the diverse areas of work and responsibilities at TU Dresden. We want to show the people behind everything that makes us special and who do their jobs with passion and dedication! More videos are available on the YouTube channels “TU Dresden entdecken” (“Discover TU Dresden”) and “TU Dresden probieren” (“Try TU Dresden”).
