"Experience - and discover - mathematics": New hidden object picture in the Erlebnisland Mathematik combines science and everyday life
What does a skate park have to do with geometry? And where is mathematics hidden in the supermarket, the park or the museum? Answers to these questions are provided by a new, large-format exhibit in the Erlebnisland Mathematik - a hidden object picture over ten square meters in size, which can be seen in the Technische Sammlungen Dresden from June 20. The detailed picture interweaves everyday scenes with mathematical ideas and encourages visitors to playfully discover where mathematics shapes the world we live in.
The hidden object picture was designed in close collaboration with mathematicians from TU Dresden and an interdisciplinary team from the fields of graphics, education and science communication. The common goal is to promote a fascination for mathematics and to show visitors young and old in an entertaining way how mathematical concepts are used in our daily lives. With its many details, the exhibit invites visitors to take a fresh look at Dresden's surroundings and discover the hidden mathematical connections.
The grand opening will take place on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the Erleb-nisland Mathematik (Technische Sammlungen Dresden, Junghansstraße 1). Guests will be given exclusive insights into the creation of the hidden object picture, background information on the selection of scenes and the opportunity to go on a voyage of discovery themselves. In addition to the project team, representatives of TU Dresden will also be available for discussions.
The new Wimmelbild complements the existing exhibition of the Erlebnisland Mathe-matik, which has been making mathematics tangible on around 1,000 m² since 2008 as a cooperation project between the Faculty of Mathematics at TU Dresden and the Technische Sammlungen Dresden. More than 100 interactive stations invite visitors to puzzle, marvel and rethink mathematics.
