Off to Lindau: TUD scientist Uliana Tsiko participates in Nobel Laureate Meeting
DESCRIPTION: Phase-field simulations of microstructure evolution (grain growth) illustrating coarsening dynamics of a system comprising approximately 1000 grains in different regimes. Grain boundaries (black networks) separate crystalline domains of differing orientations (white regions). The system evolves from an initial configuration (top) through numerical simulations reproducing i) mean curvature flow (MCF), which mimics the behavior of foams and froths (indicated in blue) and ii) MCF with internal stresses, capturing the more complex behavior of polycrystals. In the bottom right region, microstructure evolution is visualized by superimposing successive grain boundary networks, color-coded from blue to red to indicate progression over time. Arrows point to grain boundaries that migrate counter to their center of curvature, a phenomenon arising from shear-coupled grain boundary motion. This behavior, which cannot be explained by MCF alone, plays a critical role in understanding the weak correlation between grain boundary velocity and curvature often observed in experimental studies. © Marco Salvalaglio
