Professional Development on Dyscalculia in Secondary School (Level I)
Description
A significant proportion of children do not develop a solid understanding of natural numbers, arithmetic operations, or calculation strategies in elementary school. Often, these children still manage to earn a grade of 3 in elementary school by memorizing answers, relying on a good memory, and practicing diligently, which allows them to advance to lower secondary school in all types of schools. In lower secondary school, however, they face massive difficulties, because without a “foundation in arithmetic,” it is virtually impossible to perform calculations involving negative numbers, fractions, decimals, variables, and terms—since memorization and practice alone are insufficient in these areas.
In this professional development session, we will therefore focus on the topic of dyscalculia and address questions such as how to recognize or characterize it, what legal changes have taken place in Saxony, and how to address this challenge in the classroom—as well as what limitations exist.
Target Audience
Mathematics teachers at secondary schools and gymnasiums
