The course will present the essential physical aspects of the properties of the Earth's atmosphere. In the atmosphere, hydrodynamics (motion of air masses), thermodynamics (heat storage and transport), light-matter interactions (heating and irradiation), and
the nucleation/aggregation of of particles (cloud microphysics) meet and together generate weather and climate.
We will disentangle different processes and achieve some theoretical understanding of relevant atmospheric phenomena.
Key words:
vertical structure of the atmosphere, gobal energy and mass fluxes, energy budget and glaciation, primitive equations, special solutions such as geostrophic wind, gravity waves, Rossby waves, cloud formation and precipitation, cyclogenesis, numerical weather prediction
