D. Leising: Improving the efficiency of psychological science through systematic consensus-building
TU Dresden
Abstract
Increasing consensus may be viewed as an indicator of progress in a research field. Despite the fact that consensus-building is a scientific activity of fundamental importance, it has largely been neglected by psychologists in the past. Among the unfortunate consequences of this neglect are a persistent chaos in terms of terminology and methodology, a waste of resources, and a lack of traceable scientific progress. In my talk, I will first highlight the importance of systematic consensus-building as a key scientific practice. Then I will present a "roadmap" for planning and steering consensus-building processes, along with a few recent and relatively successful examples. I will also talk about some of the potential pitfalls of consensus-building.
