D. McNamee: Flexible generative sampling in the entorhinal-hippocampal system
Abstract: I will present an abstract model of the entorhinal-hippocampal system regarding how sequences of positions within cognitive maps may be sampled. In particular, I will highlight how systematically modulating medial entorhinal input into hippocampus facilitates a remarkably flexible generative process. Leveraging this flexibility, I will argue that the brain may interpolate between various modes of sequential hippocampal reactivations which are contrastingly optimized for distinct downstream cognitive processes such as planning versus consolidation. Via simulation, it will be demonstrated that the model coheres several phenomena, such as generative cycling, diffusive hippocampal reactivations, and “jumping” trajectory events, within a normative framework.
