Year-end Meeting of the Working Group for Democracy with a Talk by Prof. Dr. Markus Scholz
All staff members of the Faculty of Psychology are warmly invited to the year-end meeting of the Working Group for Democracy on 8 December at 3 p.m. via Zoom.
We look forward to the talk by Prof. Dr. Markus Scholz (Chair of Business Administration, in particular Responsible Management, TU Dresden) on the topic Companies and Their Responsibility for Liberal Democracy: Business with Values. The talk is organized in cooperation with the Center for Demography and Diversity (CDD) and will be held in German.
Abstract: Companies and Their Responsibility for Liberal Democracy: Business with Values
The talk is based on my recently published book Wirtschaft mit Werten, in which I explore why companies and their leaders should commit themselves to protecting liberal democracy and countering the rise of populism. I argue that liberal democracy, together with the social market economy, represents the central political realization of the ideas of the Enlightenment and liberalism, safeguarding the civil liberties of all citizens. When this order is threatened by populist actors, not only individual freedoms but also the institutional foundations that underpin entrepreneurial activity in the social market economy come under pressure. Building on these considerations, I will briefly outline the research and activities of my Chair in the field of Business and Democracy.
