New publication on explicit emotion regulation in bipolar disorder
In their new systematic review Deficits in explicit emotion regulation in bipolar disorder: a systematic review Marcel Kurtz, Pia Mohring, Katharina Förster, Michael Bauer and Philipp Kanske present an overview of studies investigating explicit emotion regulation in individuals at increased risk of bipolar disorder, patients with current affective episodes, and patients with euthymic mood state. On the one side, results suggest that the neural activity during explicit emotion regulation is a sensitive measure for an increased risk for developing bipolar disorder, even when there are no signs of manifestation on a behavioural level. Further, patients with acute affective episodes show differences in neural activity during explicit emotion regulation, especially in the region of the ventro-rostral anterior cingulate cortex. Euthymic patients, compared to control groups, on the other hand show differing neural activations especially in lateral prefrontal areas. The open-access article was published in the International Journal of Bipolar Disorders.
