New article on neural changes following social and interoceptive training
The human brain has special abilities related to social interactions like understanding others' thoughts (Theory of Mind), empathy, and compassion. Sophie Valk, Philipp Kanske, Bo-yong Park, Seok-Jun Hong, Anne Böckler, Fynn-Mathis Trautwein, Boris Bernhardt and Tania Singer studied 332 healthy adults using multimodal functional magnetic imaging and behavioural tests to determine if different types of social training can alter brain structure and function. Importantly, the changes, which were discovered in brain function and structure after the social training, predicted improvements in attention, compassion, and perspective taking. These findings demonstrate that the brain can adapt and change based on the social skills we practice, and these changes are associated with improvements in how we interact with others.
