Young Minds explainer article by Kate Bray
Since 2023, Philipp Kanske's working group has enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with the University of Melbourne to create a new English version of the EmpaToM-Y task. The EmpaToM-Y task is used with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to examine important socio-affective and -cognitive processes in adolescents. As part of the project, Dr. Kate Bray, Prof. Philipp Kanske and Prof. Sarah Whittle have written a concept explainer article for young people aged 12-15. They elucidate how researchers try to study the processes of understanding the thoughts and feelings of others (known as mentalising) and of sharing other's emotions (known as empathy). In an effort to involve young people in the scientific writing and evaluation process, this article was reviewed by young people from a high school in Melbourne who presented their feedback and decision to the authors in a live review event.
