Architecture and Construction Talks Project Week
From June 15 to 19, 2026, the TUD Dresden University of Technology once again opened its doors to 8th- through 10th-grade students interested in Civil Engineering, landscape architecture, and architecture as part of the “Architecture and Construction Talks” project week.
Creative Ideas for the BUGA
This year’s design assignment focused on looking toward the future: For the Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA) to be held in Dresden in 2033, the students developed their own architectural concepts for two complementary structures on the Südpark exhibition grounds. They designed a wooden observation deck and a meeting place made of carbon concrete. Both elements were intended to promote interaction and exchange.
Academic Guidance Through Hands-On Work
During the project week, the students worked on a design assignment. Step by step, in small groups, they produced initial sketches, floor plans, and elevations, as well as detailed drawings and a model. In the process, the participants grappled with questions of design, construction, material selection, and integration into the landscape, and were guided by faculty and students from TUD.
The results presented at the final presentation impressively demonstrated the diverse range of ideas the participants had for a place of encounter and views. Creative concepts, innovative structures, and nuanced designs for integration into the future BUGA landscape highlighted the students’ dedication and high level of creative design.
Funding and Acknowledgments
The project week was funded by the Collaborative Research Center SFB I TRR 280 of the TUD’s Faculty of Civil Engineering and carried out in collaboration with the ServiceCenterStudium (SCS).
We would like to extend our special thanks to Prof. Dr. Birgit Beckmann (Institute of Concrete Structures), Prof. Dr. Robert Jockwer (Chair of Timber Engineering), both from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, as well as Carola Handrianz (Institute of Landscape Architecture) from the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape for their support and dedicated guidance during the project week.
Prof. Dr. Manfred Curbach also made it possible to use the CUBE carbon concrete house as an inspiring workspace for the project week.
We would also like to thank Saskia Remmler (Saxony Chamber of Architects) and Niklas Blume (MKP GmbH) for their presentations on the professions of architect and civil engineer.
