Timber construction becomes an integral part of architecture studies at TU Dresden
Modern timber construction teaching will be firmly anchored in architecture studies at the TUD Dresden University of Technology in future. As part of a project by Holzbau Kompetenz Sachsen GmbH (HKS) in cooperation with the large district town of Niesky and TU Dresden, the Chair of Architectural Design and Construction I (Prof. Ansgar Schulz, Prof. Benedikt Schulz) and Chair of Structural Design (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Beckh) will establish a course of at least eight semester hours per week from May 1, 2026.
The course includes practical content on building construction and load-bearing structures, fire protection and building physics, sustainability and the circular economy as well as the history of modern timber construction with reference to the Niesky pioneer Konrad Wachsmann. Teaching is supplemented by excursions to the region and practice-oriented coursework in collaboration with local companies and planning offices.
This step will make an important contribution to strengthening timber construction in Saxony and to the practical training of future architects.
