Preparatory Course

Propaedeutic/foundation course with DSH

To a limited extent, the TU Dresden offers the possibility to its future students to prepare for the DSH in a language course free of charge. The DSH can then be taken at the TU Dresden. Participants in the preparatory semester will be enrolled as students at the TU Dresden.

Requirements for the Applicant:

A solid Mittelstufe knowledge of the German language. This means:

  • Certificate of completion of the Mittelstufe II/B2 with minimum grade of „satisfactory“
  • Zertifikat Deutsch with minimum grade of „satisfactory“ and proof of further attendance in Mittelstufe classes
  • Proof of the following language certificates: Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung (ZMP) of the Goethe Institute with minimum grade of „satisfactory“, Language Diploma of the Education Ministers Conference (EMC), level 1, Test DaF with minimum of 14 points.

Due to the large number of applicants for the Preparatory Semester, a written admission test will be given immediately before the beginning of the language course. Here you will find a sample of the admission test: ein Beispiel für diesen Aufnahmetest. Only the best c. 60 students may then be accepted into the course. At the moment there are only four groups, each with 15 students. During attendance in the DSH-courses, the participants will be enrolled as students of the TU Dresden. Those students who do not get accepted into the free courses, may take DSH preparatory courses at the TUDIAS which is subject to a fee.

Note:

The Preparatory Semester is part of a tutorial program at the TU Dresden International Office in support of international students. Along with the DSH course, it comprises a subject(major degree)-specific supervision in preparation of the chosen degree programme.

Further information on this may be found under the heading of  Propädeutikum.

Applicants with No German language ability

Unfortunately, applicants with no knowledge of German will not be allowed to reserve a study place in a degree programme taught in German.

Should your knowledge of German still not be sufficient, it is recommended that you take approximately 1,000 hours of German language classes (reaching a minimum level of Mittelstufe II/B2). With a certificate of language ability, the student may then be eligible to apply to the TU Dresden. You will then receieve a study place reservation and may then take additional language courses in Germany in preparation for the DSH test. (s.o. Preparatory Semester)

For applicants without sufficient German language skills, but who do have certificates  attesting to exceptional school achievement, there is another possibility: you have the opportunity to obtain a TU Dresden Applicant’s Confirmation. With this Applicant’s Confirmation you may – in connection with registration at a recognized language institute – make application for a Study Visa, which will allow you to improve your German in Germany. The costs of attendance at a language school/institute must be paid by the applicant. Registration at the TU Dresden will not be possible.

Here you will find list of language schools in Dresden.
