Oak processionary moth caterpillars in the Botanical Garden
Please observe the large-scale barriers in the outdoor area
Occurrences of the oak processionary moth have been discovered in the outdoor area of the Botanical Garden. The caterpillars of this moth live on oak trees and benefit from a warm, dry climate during their development. There have also been detections in the Botanical Garden in previous years - as well as in the neighboring Great Garden. The caterpillars can be dangerous to humans. They have stinging hairs whose venom can cause severe itching, pustules, hives, breathing difficulties (including severe respiratory distress) and eye irritation if they come into contact with the skin or are inhaled.
Until the nests have been removed, we ask visitors to avoid the cordoned-off areas. Please keep your distance from caterpillars and nests!
Further information on the oak processionary moth is available from the City of Dresden or the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation(BfN).
