Successful spring colloquium 2024
The fourth generation of the Boysen-TU Dresden Research Training Group has successfully completed its two-day spring colloquium, the third internal colloquium since its inception. It promoted a lively exchange of knowledge, provided new impetus for projects from other scientific perspectives and once again demonstrated the constructive cooperation between all members of the Research Training Group. The colloquium took place on April 8 and 9, 2024 in the office building at Falkenbrunnen.
It began with a warm welcome and introduction by Managing Director Dr. Anna Martius and the two speakers Prof. Antonio Hurtado and Prof. Dr. Lutz Hagen, but the foundation stone for the exciting event was laid by Prof. Peter Lund, Professor of Applied Physics at Aalto University in Finland, with his one-hour keynote speech right at the beginning. Peter Lund is considered to be one of the most renowned energy experts who also conducts interdisciplinary research, has worked with the Research Training Group for many years and was invited to the third colloquium as a mentor for the students and to critically assess the research presented.
During the colloquium, he was available for one-on-one discussions and as a valuable discussion partner for all of the doctoral students in order to highlight interdisciplinary perspectives. Prof. Lund has over 40 years of experience in the fields of energy and science. He can look back on a wealth of experience in research and teaching and works in an interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral manner.
Prof. Lund's keynote lecture Systemic Views on the Transition towards Hydroge Economy focused on three main areas:
- On the "framing*" of problems
- Energy transition towards [decarbonization &] hydrogen?
- The hydrogen economy
* Framing: a communicative message is contextually framed. An issue is therefore placed in a specific context of meaning. Depending on the frame, the same fact appears positive or negative.
In the lecture, these three topics were discussed from the perspective of various fields of research such as social sciences, engineering, natural sciences and economics. He also addressed the future role of artificial intelligence, which is now indispensable. After Prof. Lund began his lecture with the statement: "Sustainability and climate change will define our century", he concluded with the statement: "A systemic global energy transition is needed to overcome the obstacles that hinder progress".
At this spring colloquium, all participants were divided into two groups, giving each collegiate the opportunity to present research results twice in front of alternating audiences. Why? Based on the experience from the fall colloquium 2023, the smaller group size was intended to provide maximum feedback and allow for in-depth discussion.
The first day ended with a joint dinner and further interesting discussions in a relaxed atmosphere at the GenussManuFaktur restaurant. After more fellows presented their work on the second day, an interactive workshop on the introduction of the JULIA programming language took place, which was organized by the fellows Christian Gutsche (project F4) and Zizhe Wang (project F6).
The Spring Colloquium 2024 ended with a summary of the two days by the speaker Prof. Hagen, who thanked the organizers and all participants for their achievements during the colloquium. Of course, special and outstanding thanks went to our guest Prof. Peter Lund, who made the long journey and enriched the event immensely with his visit, his presentation and above all with his questions and changes of perspective.
The Boysen-TU Dresden Graduate School would like to take this opportunity to thank him once again and is already looking forward to future collaboration that will further enrich the (research) journey of all members.
