Doctoral student speaks at conference and receives research prize
An intensive week of conferences lies behind doctoral student Konstantin Schmidt (sub-project H4) at the end of September, who took part in two top-class specialist events.
The week began with the 29th Charging Technology Conference in Dresden on September 23 and 24, 2025. International experts from science and industry met there to discuss current trends in the field of turbocharging. Topics such as implementation in hybrid powertrains, the use of renewable synthetic fuels and the charging of fuel cells were discussed. On the second day of the conference, Konstantin Schmidt presented the results of his research into the use of ammonia in combustion engines. The focus was on the use of an exhaust gas turbocharger to improve combustion properties. The investigations showed that by increasing the boost pressure and the intake air temperature, the ignition delay can be shortened and the stability of the combustion improved. The presentation was followed by an interesting technical discussion, which demonstrated the audience's keen interest in the topic.
The journey to Vienna for the e-Fuels Climate Contribution Conference (eKKon) began the very next morning. At the conference, representatives from science, industry and politics discussed how synthetic fuels can be used to achieve the ambitious climate targets. In addition to technological aspects, political and legal aspects were also highlighted. The day culminated in an evening event in the glass Joseph Leitl Lounge on the roof of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. Here, fellow student Konstantin Schmidt was presented with the 3rd Young Scientist Award for his outstanding thesis entitled "3D-CFD investigation into the use of ammonia in combustion engines". After the award ceremony and a joint dinner, the evening offered time for discussions and networking - a worthy conclusion to these intensive days.
