Rana Taher Abdelkader Presents Her Research at IUHS 2025
Rana Taher Abdelkader recently participated in the International Urban Health Summit (IUHS) 2025, held in Hannover from 9–11 April 2025. She was selected as part of a group of early career researchers (PhDs and Postdocs) who were awarded travel grants to present their research posters at the summit.
In addition, she took part in a plenary session on “Natural Environment, Climate Change, and Urban Health,” where she presented her ongoing PhD research titled “University Campus Healthscapes: Introducing the Healthy Space Index (HSI) for Cultivating Healthy Built Environments.” During the plenary, she also engaged in a panel discussion that focused on topics related to the environment and urban health.

Rana’s work focuses on transforming university campuses (seen as cities in microcosm) into health-promoting catalysts, advocating for their use as urban experimental settings to foster healthier built environments at larger scales. The research aims to develop a design-oriented conceptual framework for creating healthy university campuses, which informs the development of the Healthy Space Index (HSI)–a dynamic tool that assesses spaces and suggests design interventions to improve spatial health status.
The summit was an enriching experience for Rana, offering valuable discussions and networking opportunities.
