Dissertation "Resilient urban greenery" published as a reference book
Two years, four cities and 15,000 trees - what conclusions can be drawn from this journey through Germany's urban greenery?
Now the time has come: the research results of Daniel Blume's dissertation Resilient Urban Greenery are available as a book. It is not just an evaluation of the extensive mapping, but the results are translated into a practical toolbox that provides recommendations for action for resilient planning at various levels:
- What measures are needed to further develop urban greenery into a resilient system in an ongoing process - with the aim of making cities more resilient and liveable?
- How can capabilities be maintained despite water scarcity?
- How can design and functional requirements and biodiversity be reconciled?
A study of the vitality and drought stress of trees in Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden and Bautzen illustrates the extent of the damage already done to urban greenery and the extent to which there are connections between building development, soil sealing, intensity of use and vegetation structures.
Linking the results into a toolbox shows how measures can be developed to adapt the district structure, optimize construction methods and select plants in a targeted manner. The focus is on resilience strategies that not only ensure resilience in times of crisis, but also promote a dynamic and diverse system.
