Preservation of an architectural icon of the 1960s in Heidelberg - Schulz and Schulz win competition
Professors Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz win the competition for the renovation and extension of a 1960s building as the future headquarters of the Institute of Earth Sciences at Heidelberg University. The so-called INF 330 building was realised in 1965-69 as the South Asia Institute according to plans by the Mannheim architect Carlfried Mutschler. The emblematic building received numerous architectural awards after its completion and has been a listed building for several years. The design task required the integration of uses compatible with the preservation order into the existing building and the arrangement of highly installed laboratory rooms in an extension. The design by Schulz und Schulz was convincing due to its careful handling of the 1960s cultural heritage and the precise placement of the extension building on the campus boulevard and green axis.
