New arrival center PHV Heidelberg - 1st prize for Schulz and Schulz
Professors Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz impressed the jury with their design for the new Heidelberg arrival center and emerged as the winners of this two-phase competition. The task of the competition was to house the arrival center for refugees on the site of the former US Armed Forces housing estate Patrick Henry Village (PHV). The arrival center has a central function in the initial reception and registration of asylum seekers in the state of Baden-Württemberg. It will consist of two areas: the processing area with an arrival building for registration, preliminary checks and advice for up to 400 people per day and the accommodation area for up to 2,000 people. In addition, there will be areas for everyday, child and family care as well as outdoor areas for sports and games.
The minutes of the jury state, among other things: "The design takes up the theme of row development in the PHV and sets a very natural ensemble with the reinterpretation of the "Waldsiedlung". The planning area opens up generously to the small-scale neighboring development to the north via the existing green space and thus preserves valuable trees. The design offers a very functional and strict concept for the new arrival center in the PHV and a good answer to the complex task. The [...] structural openness of the design and the urban setting allow for many positive development possibilities."
