Video Profile: Saxony Timber Construction Award
The Saxon State Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development recently completed and released the final film portraits of the current winners of the Saxon Timber Construction Award. Professors Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz (Chair of Architectural Design and Construction I) were awarded the Saxon Timber Construction Prize for their new building project, “DBFZ German Biomass Research Center Leipzig,” one of three projects to receive the award. “The Wood Construction Award brilliantly demonstrates the compelling architectural and structural solutions that are possible with this unique and locally sourced building material,” said State Minister Thomas Schmidt during the award ceremony.

“Transformations” Summer School in Buenos Aires
From October 18 to 24, 2022, the Chair of Architectural Design and Construction I, with funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), organized a summer school at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). For this event, Prof. Ansgar Schulz and Prof. Benedikt Schulz, along with Research Associate Katharina Benjamin, traveled to Argentina at the invitation of Tristán Dieguez, a professor at the Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo (FADU). The summer school was planned as a seven-day workshop designed to highlight the potential for engaging with architectural heritage, impart technical knowledge, and provide insight into German teaching and research practices. The program began with presentations on the challenges and opportunities of industrial architectural heritage, current issues in Argentina, and outstanding examples of deindustrialization and the sustainable preservation of architectural heritage. The focus was on testing the strategies taught on a specific architectural site: a 19th-century building used as a workshop where sculptures from the urban space are refurbished and restored. The participating FADU students examined the existing structure and developed architecturally sound concepts designed to strengthen the site.
